About this tool
Word limits are everywhere: school essays, grant applications, job portals, meta descriptions. Platforms count in slightly different ways, so this counter shows several measures at once. Use the one your destination uses: universities usually set limits in words, while social platforms and search snippets count characters.
Characters are counted as you see them, so an emoji or an accented letter counts as one. Characters without spaces leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks, which some translation and publishing rates are based on.
Known limitations
- Word boundaries follow your browser's language rules. Hyphenated words count as one word; other tools may count them as two, so totals can differ slightly from Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
- Sentence detection relies on punctuation. Abbreviations such as “e.g.” or “Dr.” can be counted as sentence ends.
- For Chinese, Japanese and Thai, word counts depend on the browser's dictionary and are approximate.
Frequently asked questions
Does the word counter store or send my text?
No. Counting runs in your browser with JavaScript. The text is not uploaded, logged or saved, and it disappears when you close or reload the page.
Why is my count different from Microsoft Word?
Programs disagree on edge cases such as hyphenated words, numbers with separators, URLs and words joined by slashes. The difference is usually one or two words per few hundred. If your limit is strict, check with the tool your teacher or publisher uses.
How many words is a page?
It depends on font, size and spacing. A double-spaced page in a 12-point font often holds roughly 250 to 300 words, and a single-spaced page about twice that. Treat these as rough guides and check your formatting rules.
