How to use the Reading Time Calculator
- Paste the text, or enter a word count if you already know it.
- Choose a reading speed preset, or type your own words-per-minute rate.
- Use the result for a “min read” label, a study plan or a talk outline.
Example
A 1,500-word article
Reading time at 238 wpm: 6 min 18 sec Speaking time at 140 wpm: 10 min 43 sec
About this tool
Reading time is word count divided by reading speed. The default of 238 words per minute comes from a 2019 meta-analysis of 190 reading studies, which estimated that rate for silent reading of non-fiction by adults in English. Fiction was read slightly faster, at about 260 wpm.
The speaking estimate uses a slower rate, because spoken delivery needs pronunciation and pauses. Change it to match your own pace.
Known limitations
- The estimate assumes continuous reading. Images, tables, code and difficult material take extra time.
- Reading speeds vary between people and languages. The default of 238 wpm comes from research on adult English readers.
- Speaking time is a planning figure. Time a rehearsal to know your real pace.
Frequently asked questions
How do websites calculate “min read”?
Most divide the word count by a fixed speed, often between 200 and 265 words per minute, and round to the nearest minute. Some add a few seconds per image.
How long is a 10-minute speech?
At 140 words per minute, about 1,400 words. At 120 wpm it is 1,200 words, and at 160 wpm it is 1,600. Rehearse with a timer to find your own speed.
Can I use it for study planning?
Yes, but use a lower speed for textbooks and technical material, because comprehension takes longer than reading a blog post.
